i have a series 3 1.7 16v and just before the cam belts snapped i could smell fuel in the cabin not all the time just every now and then, i was hoping that with all that was involved in replacing the heads and replacing the filter and such that the problem would magic it's self away(ahhhh wishful thinking) and to start with all seemed well but now a week on from the work being finished and now with a lovely fresh mot the smell has returned!! i've checked all the fuel lines and can't see where it could be coming from! could it be something to do with the fuel return? or the pump? or the tank, god i hope its not the last one!

any ideas would be greatfully recieved!

thanks for your time.

Charlie

i had a 1.5 ie that did the same thing. turned out to be blocked/leaking fuel filter. in my ie it was in the boot with the fuel pump, by passenger side wheel well...

the filters brand new but i guess if there is a fair amount of crap in the tank then it could be blocked, i was just talking to Alex(33bits) and he said it could be one of the joints on the pipe between the tank and the filler cap so i'm going to check that out too.

There is a breather pipe on the top of the series Mr. Green 2 (dunno about the series 3) tank that often splits due to age and when the tank is full it can leak out, I only fill up when the pump stop flowing due to back pressure, any more then you end up pissing all over the road lol.
