Whats the easiest way of adding an oil temp sensor?
oil drain plug?
I was told to drill into the block, FCUK that I will be doing another oil change soon, filter on order, should be there next week, so maybe a possibility.
Can one be added to the dip stick??
What about where the oil pressure sender is, i have seen adapters to add them, does that actually make contact with the oil?? _________________ x2 33 16v

Where would you suggest? is there a place ready for a sensor, like a moulding in the cast, there could already be a hole ready for such a thing. Less of the dimwit please. _________________ x2 33 16v

Anyone care to add some constructive criticism
My oil filter never arrived because they forgot to order it lol.
If you are supposed to drill the block, where, as space is limited, I wouldn’t want to drill into anything internal.
Where the oil pressure gauge is, does oil make contact with it and if so could a T-piece be put in to add an oil temp sender? It looks like there is a channel where the oil runs in. _________________ x2 33 16v

I've seen (ages ago) oil filters with a sensor attached to them for a gauge to be wired to. Used to see a few of them in the custom car & hot-rod scene. Maybe worth looking to see if anything is available for a 33? _________________ 155 sportpack

My Imola has a threaded hole into the oil gallery at the top rear of the block, almost under the ignition coils. This had an M14 x 1.5 plug in it, but I have now put in a sensor for an oil pressure gauge, M10 x 1 with a reducing bush and a bit of moving things around a tad to avoid the connections fouling other components.
The 1.7 has a sensor in that position, just in from the distributor. The car doesn't have an oil pressure gauge, so I assume it is an oil pressure switch for the Alfa Control.
So, if you don't have the Alfa Control, you may have a spare position there which could take a temperature sensor, provided it doesn't obstruct the oil gallery unduly.
The gallery has quite a generous diameter, so a short sensor with M10 x 1 connection might do the trick. _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Carcassonne. I have fitted an oil pressure gauge in that position, could a T-Piece go there? What about the low oil pressure connection by the dipstick, a combo for low pressure to console and temp to a gauge, or is there no contact with the oil by the dipstick? _________________ x2 33 16v

Not for a temp gauge, it wouldn't be in the oil, so wouldn't give a meaningful reading

Do you mean the oil pressure connection above the oil filter?
(I have just noticed that the Imola's oil pressure sender is there, whereas the 1.7 has that point plugged and the oil pressure sender on top of the block, as I mentioned)
I don't know if a combination temperature sender plus pressure switch exists.
If not, you could put a combination pressure switch plus gauge sender in one position, and the temperature sender in the other. Still making sure that the temperature sender (which has a longer reach than the pressure sender) does not obstruct the oil passage. _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Carcassonne. Rich if I were to take the output from my oil presure sender "in the middle top back of the block" split it and feed that to the low oil pressure connector as well "near the oil dipstick" would that work? As in does the oil pressure sender give out the same signal when pressure is low? I assume the original low warning sender shorts to ground when there is no pressure ?
If it does work i could then replace the low oil pressure "by the dipstick" with a temp sender to another guage? _________________ x2 33 16v

I don't understand what you mean by splitting the output from one OP sender and feeding it to the other.
The OP sender supplies an analog signal to a gauge.
The "low warning sender" is just a switch which connects a light to ground when the pressure is low.
If you connect a temp sender to the connection near the dipstick I don't think it will be immersed in the oil, just connected to a passage to the oil gallery, so it won't show the true oil temperature.
As I said before, I think the best place for a temperature sender is in the connection on the block, where it is in the oil going to the engine, always provided it doesn't restrict the gallery.
Put a combined OP sender/low OP switch in the position near the dipstick.
I mean the dipstick on the engine

Sorry if i confused you.
My thinking was that if my op sender sent no signal, as in short to ground, the same as the low pressure sender, when there was no pressure, then it could do both low pressure and feed the pressure gauge, I guess not. Thanks for explaining.
So oil pressure in the block has constant flow and can do temp, where as pressure near the dipstick doesn’t have flow, just pressure, I think I am there now low.
It took me ages to source Alfa Romeo OEM gauge “thanks Iain” and sender “thanks pat” to fit the weird size in the block _________________ x2 33 16v

I use a T joint adapter that came with the veglia dails I have and mounted (of course) at the oil press sensor hole. I also have a veglia oil press gause and it comes with the warning light. I really don't see how else you should mount an additional probe given the fact there are ready adapters. Cheers! |

I have taken a picture of the adapter (off the car). I need to find the cable to upload it. It's been a while so I need to look at the engine again to recall where I mounted them. I remembered I specifically had oil temp, oil press, oil press warning light all working well. |

Ok I think I didn't unswer your first question. Near the oil filter where oil is forced through the filter. I have very good readings. Oil temp takes much longer time to heat up even when water reaches 80 after warm up. Hits 120 degress after 7 hot laps around the circuit in a very warm climate.
Do you need a picture of the (T)adaptor or I suppose you already know how it looks like. |
