16V throttle cable - correct setting.

Hi all. I have been having a bit of a poke around on my new 33 16valve which has replaced my pranged P4, and I have noticed that when the accelerator pedal is fully depressed that there is still about 10-15mm movement that is not taken up by the throttle bodies because of the slack in the cable. I have fully tightened down the large bolt that sits under the pedal, but there is still some slack in the cable. How can I adjust it because I presume that when it is floored the butterflies in the throttle bodies are not being fully opened with the result of less power? Mind you, the car is still pretty quick, quicker than the P4..in the dry at least!!

I am going to put the P4 alloys onto my silver 16Valve (after they have been reconditioned) as I think these are a much better looking alloy than the late split-rim style alloys that are fitted to my car (which are all corroded anyway). My car is also without a rear spoiler..but I think the Mk3 33's look much better with a spolier than without..so that will be coming off my wrecked P4 as well!!

One final thing is that the new 16 valve goes well (only 57,000) on the clock but at light throttle it is a bit jerky. Is that because the cable needs adjustment or is it as I have read that the 16 Valves are just like that? My P4 wasn't for some reason. Would a chip improve smoothness and low down response and which is the best value one to fit??

Hi,

There is some adjustment on the throttle body side of the cable. Also the length of the linkages between the cable bodies may help. But if you adjust them you need to check that the throttle bodies still open in sync.

I had a broken linkage on the LHS throttle body; the linkage ends are made out of plastic.

Also from memory there is adjustment on the bodies themselves again you need to watch out to make sure they are in sync.

Hi Paul,

On my P4 I swayed a bit metal on the acc. pedal that is pulling cable.
Chip could smooth acceleration.

With regard to chips, it seems to me that the Squadra chip (www.squadra-tuning.com) represents the best value for money. It smoothens out the acceleration and idle, and makes it rev as high as 7200 rpm, according to reviews.

Nobody I've talked to has anything to say about the Autodelta/Forza chips (nobody seems to have tried them)...
