|
|
Just got a new slim type radiator fan.
Multi thin curved blades, 10 inch wide.
I think it will fit in just snuggly as the height of the radiator is 10 inch on my S2
This is to replace the 23 year old Bosch 7 1/2 inch 4 blade fan. Noisy and slow.
I'll see if I get an improvement in cooling in these hot summers in Uruguay.
Also got 2 new Dellorto floats coming in a month as 1 was showing signs of cracking!!
These were kind of expensive. (but still cheaper than maintaining a fuel injection car!!). _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

|
|
I just had a new crankshaft pulley installed as the old one was not original and was too small. Only 58mm!!
A new alloy 122mm one was made and fitted.
I told the guys to put a 10 x 850 belt on the car. They put a 13 x 838 on!
I thought everything was fine until these last few days.
1) Above 82 degrees there is an intermittent squeaking noise. Every half second or so.
2) I initially thought they had damaged one of the bearings using a pneumatic wrench to remove the crankshaft pulley nut - but the noise is intermittent and only starts above 80 degrees. Wouldn't the noise be constant if it was a bearing issue and when cold also?
3) Maybe as the pulley is 13mm and when the pulleys expand when hot the pulley is squeaking. It's too wide?
I will change the pulley to a 10 x 850 tonight to see if that makes a difference.
Can't imagine it being a valve/tappet issue as it sounds more like a squeak and I have 300V 15w/50 racing oil in the engine designed for high temperatures.
Any ideas/suggestions of what it might be? _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

I certainly hope not.
I will swap the belt to it's 10mm one tonight and hope this was the issue.
If it was a bearing issue, wouldn't the sound be constant? _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Yes, probably and more likely at startup anyway, but you never know, just an idea. _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV

OK latest update.
I changed the belt. In fact I was wrong, it was a 10mm belt but very short.
I replaced it for a goodyear 10 x 850 as standard.
The squeal is definitely not the belt.
I rotated the water pump while the belt was off. It felt firm and smooth.
As the temp of the engine got above 80 degrees the squeal appeared again.
It sounds like the new pulley is touching a metal part as it rotates.
I'm thinking that maybe when it expands when it gets hot it is slightly touching a part of the timing belt casing or something.
It does sound like a metal against metal squeal.
As the pulley was hand made I'm thinking the outer edge is slightly oversized, it was a very tight fit. If it expands by a mm or 2 then it could be touching the casing when hot.
Is the casing easy to remove without dismantling other parts?
I will drive it over the coming weeks and see if the sound slowly disappears or gets worse.
The sound is not coming from the alternator.
I could also slip a piece of paper in between the pulley and belt casing to see if it slices the paper.
Just hope it's not the water pump bearing. Not sure what kind of sound that would make when failing. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Water pump bearing tends more to rumble rather than squeal, although you never know.
Timing belt covers (casing) come off with 10 mm bolts round the outer edges. The main problem can be the bottom ones which must be accessed from behind - there are captive nuts in the covers and these can detach themselves and are then a bugger to remove.
If there is a smell of rubber with the squealing it may be a stuck cambelt pulley? _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV

yes i was thinking the same.

think I'll avoid that for now then. The bumper was tricky enough with the captive nuts (2 were missing!!) so I needed an assistant to hold a spanner under the car while I removed the other side.

No burning smell luckily. And the sound is intermittent but regular as if it is one side of a pulley. Sound disappears when I rev the engine. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Tight cambelt? I had a rubbing noise which was a result of a tight belt on one side. |

Can't imagine it's the cambelt tightness. Nothing has changed there.
Closer listening it sounds like a metal to metal squealing.
I'm going to paint the outer edges of the new pulley and also around the nut and pulley to see if anything is scraping or moving around when hot. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

I was carefully investigating the pulleys last night, cold and hot.
The inside of the pulley is so close to the block of the engine on a small part. I can slip a business card between when it is cold but when it heats up there is no gap. It is scraping here just very slightly.
It's made of aluminium so I think over time this will wear down and disappear. I could slip a small piece of sand paper between these 2 surfaces while it's rotating but this is kind of risky. I'll see how it develops over a few weeks and wears down.
The pulley is totally centered and is not slipping. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Squeaking noise is slowly disappearing.
It was actually the belt just slightly touching the edge of the new aluminium pulley.
No danger of breakage. I carefully examined it. It just needs bedding in.
Also put new floats in.
They are so much more floaty than the old ones. Had to raise the height and maybe needs raising further than factory specs.
On the main jets @ 120 km/hr 3400 rpm steady speed my AFR is reading about 14.7-15.1.
A little too lean I think.
No overheating though. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV
