Hi,
I finally used up enough fuel to drop my fuel tank. It leaked from the top when it was brimmed for the 1st time in years
Tank is in very good shape-thanks to waxoyl- and the leak looks as though it came from the main supply hose to the pump off the sender, as it is in bad shape and seemed to be saturated in fuel at the join with the sender.
I'm gonna replace this and probably the other hoses and clean up and hammerite/black waxoyl the tank exterior.
Questions:
1) One fault my car has had since I got it is that the fuel light comes on and stays on at anything less than 4/5 full tank. Can I fix the sender (doesn't look like it)?? I could i guess disconnect one wire which would mean the light would never come on which would be less irritating. I could get a new sender to sort this problem once and for all.
2) There was a small lead or ally button floating around in the tank- I shook it out, but is this meant to be there?? Perhaps to stop rust or varnish forming??
3) Would you fill the tank with water to wire brush it, to avaoid going up in smoke? Would it be sufficient to then leave the tank to air dry before refitting and filling- will the water cause problems??
Cheers guys

Hi John,
Yes you can fill the tank with water and you should so in order to gas-free the tank from vapors. Then you can proceed in repairs.
In order to be sure that no water is left inside prior installation, you can either use an air blower to dry things out or simply add a few litres of gas, and shake the tank well. Gas will go everywhere inside and will wipe out any trace of water or moisture. It think rinsing with gas two or three times will do the job.
