Not having a very successful day today. Red TI passed its MOT last week with a note on low brake pads. So in lieue of our imminent move I thought I'd take the opportunity to change them.
I thought I had two nearly new sets, but the first set wouldn't fit as they have a bit of a hump at the top - are these for TIs without vented discs?

So I got the second set out only to find that they are Ferodo racing pads and as Sue drives the car, unless I've really underestimated her, I don't think she'll get them up to temperature.

So does anyone want to buy these pads from me or better still, swap them for a set of normal good pads?

Strange that the race pads have sensors, all my old feredo ds 2500 or 3000 pads never had them. I never had any issue with tempeture tho as the 33s discs are small and heat up very quickly, I would try them paul (sorry al) and see if Sue tells you off for letting her loose with improved brakes?!.

dont listen to him paul Laughing
on a serious note, when i had red dot 40 or 60 groove disks, i cant remember which ones, i had race pads, and had to drive down the road with my foot on the pedal every morning otherwise i had no brakes at the end of the road. With standard disks and those pads, i am sure it would be worse, but feel free to let sue try them and proove iain right or me wrong Laughing but advise her lol.

Pads changed, after 2 ½ hours FFS!!
Paul came round earlier today, the weather looked mkay, but the clouds were looming. Right in the middle of the job, the heavens opened up, did that deter us, well yes, after being under a huge Alfa Romeo umbrella for a while, we decided to have a break, have a KitKat and sat in Paul’s car whilst the rain subsided.
Now a pad change to me should take 15 – 20 mins a side, if there are no problems.
I have to say I am not happy with Alfa Romeo for 3 reasons.

1. 15mm thin spanner needed. The only size not in my tool kit, why? Other brakes on my 33 used a 7mm Allen key, not a 13 and 15mm combo.

2. Stupid push in trim holders used. The 2 part ones with the plunger in the middle, which break of course, why Alfa Romeo couldn’t stick with the standard everyday 1 piece push in type is beyond me.

3. Brake warning light cable has to be fed through PITA gap. Why Alfa Romeo just didn’t extend the loom through the hole and have the low pad warning connector attached to the inside the wheel arch with a sealed rubber sleeve, like ABS sensor connectors I have seen on other cars, is again beyond me.

Number 3 is what took most of the time because of number 2 and not being able to move the plastic wheel arch lining is a real PITA. Paul used a piece of wire, as a mouse and got the 2 connectors through the hole, yes 2 connectors, whilst I sanded the pads down, even though only 1 connector is used.

I shared one of my tips for retracting the calliper cylinder I thought of when I had nothing to hand and will share it with you.
If you use you wheel brace, or whoosy bar and put it lengthways against the piston, where the pad would sit and put the calliper against the strut, you can push hard enough to push the piston back in.

Hey Iain Laughing
Yup Paul is a real trooper lol
I am not quite back on the road yet, still got to do the clutch slave cylinder.
There was nothing wrong with my brakes, I think scratching each others back is what is going on here and if I can help I will. It is a bonus for me, I hope lol and after the pads are bed in I’ll let you know.
Think I need some decent 40 / 60 groove disks now Laughing

Just spoke to Circuit Supplies about identifying these pads as I couldn't find fe3000 anywhere and he said, id 451 are a fast road pad last produced in sept 93, then replaced with 3466, then ds2000. lol

at the begining of January, a week later i did the 1st heat cycle.

As predicted i got green fade at the 7th application, i kept going until the 10th.
I let the brakes cool down and the brakes were pants. I did not get the chance to to a suggested 2nd heat cycle and just drove around like this until tonight.
I did the first heat cycle again and again got green fade on the 7th application, i let them cool down and did it again, this time i did not get green fade at all and brakes seemed better. I let the brakes cool down again and did a few tests, they now have a bite that gets stronger as you slow and will lock up if you press too hard, lock up would not have happened before.
I will do a brake fluid change tomorrow, weather permitting and if and when i get to drive again, i normally only use the car once a week, i will update you.

Sooo much better, i kept finding myself doing emergency stops and trying not to lock up

I just got some ferodo DS3000 fcp546r, as Iain said they do not have any wear indicators, are 10.5mm thick and the wear groove is 3mm, adviced to change at 2mm.

The pads from paul lasted 1 year and 7 months aprx 7916 miles with 1 hour at Spa Smile
What do you guys normally get?

The top set look like ones for "Girling" calipers(Late 1.3 i.e.s like mine have them), which were actually made by Bendix if I'm not mistaken.

The bottom ones look like the proper Bendix Caliper pads.

Zenith's Imola have the Girling brakes http://alfaimola.free.fr/technique/freins/plaquettes/index.html

The bottom set look like mine in my 1.7 QV which are ATE calipers.
The top set are for Lucas (girling?) and I have a set of these, brand new in the box, which I bought in error recently, so if anyone wants them they are yours for a fiver and P&P

I thought the ATE pads had holes in them but I'm probably mistaken.

Those Girling/Lucas pads would interest me. Will send PM.

I was going to make a start on changing my pads but it’s raining intermittently, I provisionally booked my car in the other day for today at West Sussex Alfa Romeo, boy am I glad I did.
1 slider on the carrier had seized on both sides, then one snapped trying to undo it so Mark drilled both the carriers and tried to knock out the slider, no joy
So thanks to Alex “alfa33 bits 07896327708” my car should be back up and running on Monday as he is now sending me some carriers and sliders in the post. I will get mine machined out and have some spare.
What I don’t understand is that part of my maintenance when changing pads, which was 1 year 7 months ago, I always take out the sliders and clean / sand and re lube with copper slip.
Considering there was only 50% brake efficiency round Spa, I think The DS3000’s are going to be good.
Should I service my front brakes once a year, like I do with my rears, I adjust up the gap and set the handbrake?
Has this happened to anyone else?

You may need to renew those bolts. You can buy sets of pads with the bolts included.

Not sure whether copper grese is the best thing in that situation. Maybe Molykote is better. I don't know for sure.

Renew bolts??
The sliders seized in the carriers, I have replacement sliders and carriers on the way, the pads come with new bolts Smile

Do racers that run standard callipers re-lube the sliders after each race meet, what do you use to lube them up?
What in the Molykote range do you suggest?
