Whilst I have my engine still in little bits, I'm considering changing the water pump.
What are the symptoms of a knackered pump?
If it isn't knackered I won't change it but I believe inspection is impossible as they have to be removed with a hammer! |

Adam,
I have found from a rebuild of a Renault engine in the past that if you leave the water pump dry for any length of time, the seal dries out slightly. The result is a leaking pump when you put it all back together again. My advice is replace the pump now if it has done any reasonable mileage, regardless of condition. It is 10X easier to do with the engine out of the car.
Cheers,

Hi,
A would like to make a question which is more or less a statistical one.
My car has now done 76.000 kms and it is 12,5 years old - do you think that the pump has still many kms to do or at a certain age do they fail?
I replace coolant once a year and the cooling system does not indicate presence of corrosion (brown liquid)
More over the pump does not make knocking sounds - it is like when the car was new.

Hi gritsop
you've just answered your own question,no it does'nt, i changed mine at about 88000 mile's, so there should be quite abit of life left in it,but then again it could fail in a couple of thousand miles.i would think your ok though.

Hi Thanassis,
My first water pump lasted 75,000 km. The second one is still going after 105,000 km with no bad signs yet.
I think that water pumps fail quickly if the engine is not run frequently. My first pump failed after my car had been in storage for a year.
Cheers,
