I have a 96 14 1.6 8v boxer, there has been a rattling noise coming from the engine for some time now. I was driving on a worn clutch as the car was due to go in for a new one on tuesday, as i pulled away from the lights it seemed as though i had lost alot of power, the oil light came briefly on and there was a nasty rattling noise coming from the bottom end. I put this down to the clutch completely giving up. I have just got it back today with a new clutch but the rattle is still there, i took it to the alfa dealer near me and the mechanic said my end bearings had gone... but a few of the lads on alfaowner.com and alfa145.co.uk reckon it could be something else and recommended you guys for assistance.

so, nasty rattle above 2000rpm and loss of a lot of power.

any assistance would be greatly appreciated...

Chris

Hi,

I think that your clutch problem is irrelevant to the rattling noise problem.
By not wanting to insult you has the motor been running low on oil?
Having the diagnosis said that the end bearing are gone this means lack of lubrication along the area of the crankshaft.

Also how about the status of the oil pump - has it been replaced?
How many kms does your car have?

Waiting for your news.

Regards,

its definatley the big end bearings that are gone, and its not jst a case of dropping the sump and replacing the shells....

am looking into sticking 1.7 16v bottom end in, or an engine rebuild at about £1100 (includes valve seals, gasket, new heads and shells, re-ground crank).

The worn bearings will result your loss in pressure.

Hi

My P4 wrecked its big end bearing shells. There was no noticeable loss of performance, but it rattled above 3000rpm, depending on throttle position, etc.

New shells fixed it and were quite cheap, and easy to fit.

All the best

Keith
