Hi, Any help appreciated - hoepfully problem is related to gear shift linkage rather than gear box. Today when starting off for the home trip, gear box was reluctant to find any gears. I ended up with 1st, 3rd and 4th for trip home(approx 130 kms). Wnent OK (like 4th gear at 120 kmh and 4500 rpm), but can anyone please tell me what to look for with respect to shift linkage as 2nd ad 5th felt like like they had bee locked out. THANKS.

PS I'm still trying to get the beast to 333,333 kms. We're almost at 3330,000 kms!

Problem appears to be broken synchro ring on second gear. Pulled the bottom of the sump and found some bits floating around. Am currently managing without 2nd gear, but thinking about getting the synchro ring and trying to do the replacement myself. Hopefully it will be reasonably easy thanks to the pictures posted by WIZZ.

I think you might find it is the linkage try putting a washer on the inside(left or right) of the bolt that connects the gearstick bottom to the shaft, this will increase the throw and will help getting the gears you are missing. Ihope this is the problem as it's easily fixed. If the washer trick works get new bits for the connection use the washers as a temp solution.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for comment, but I dropped the sump off last weekend and had a few bits fall out - such as broken 2nd synchro ring. I've got part on order and hopefully the job won't be too hard. On a slightly different note, is there anyway of using 2nd gear with the synchro gone? E.g. can one double clutch to get it into 2nd? THANKS.

Hi,

early cars didn't have synco rings at all, so it was double clutching all the time (quite some fun, I suppose Laughing ). It helps when your synco is worn out, so it should also help when there's no syncro at all...

Cheers,

Marcin

Think the trick to change gear is blip the throttle and change down as the revs fall. Bit of practise gets the gears changing without the crunch. Sort of matching the engine speed to the gear.

In other words DOUBLE DE-CLUTCHING.
