Hi,
Have lost power to coil on my 33, so no ignition light on dashboard, engine will turn over on starter but as no power to coil will not start. Have tested coil by running power to coil direct from battery, ignition comes on and engine starts. The power supply to coil seems to be a green and black wire which runs through bulkhead up behind dash. I have looked at ignition switch and this only has a brown red and black coming off. Green and black wire seems to go up behind clocks don't know where it goes too as no wiring diagram anybody any ideas on how to fix. Car is an 89 1.7 veloce.

Hi, just off the top of my head, without checking under the bonnet, I think your green/black is your tacho impulse wire. Power supply to the coil comes out of the loom that lies across the engine at the same point that the l/h headlight wires exit. The plug between engine and dash loom could be a source of trouble.

I had the same problem the other day with my Minari, but I was given a clue, by smoke from the steering column cowl.
I got home on the back of a rescue vehicle.
The ignition switch caused the problem. Fortunately I had a spare steering column with all switches in the garage so just changed the whole lot. Problem solved. I haven't looked inside the switch yet.

Had similar problem and it turned out to be a connector under the dash - LHS of steering column (on RHD car), which had become disconnected a little. Once it was pushed back together the car started fine. It's located a short distance away from the ignition switch. Hope this helps. |
