hi i people,
i am in serious need of help...my gear stick just snapped of (literally 5 mins ago)...its the metal that connects the gear stick to this round pipe sort of thing (dunno the right word) at the end of the stick. Its right under the bolts...so basically its not the rod that goes towards the gearbox its the little round pipe that keeps the stick and makes it move...now what can i do???must i change the whole gearbox...i noticed that the little round pipe thing is also held by two bolts, so can i remove it and buy a new gear stick and round thing. SO if anybody can help then help plzzz

Shocked Whoa, sorry to hear that mate.
I would recommend buying a new, or used for that matter, one. I don't think changing it will be any problem, like I said in this post: http://www.alfa-pages.co.uk/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1308, it should be possible to tilt the engine / gearbox, and then swap this round ting.
Best of luck.

If this is a serious question (not a piss take), the answer is probably to replace the broken bit.
If the engin/Gearbox bit is similar to mine. At the rear of the Gearbox you will see that there is a tail section bolted on, this follows the gear selection mechanism back to a free floating bush mounting that stabalises the rear of the motor. This tail is joined by two bolts and rubber bushes to the gearbox. One bolt above the other which is higher, hidden in the body. Loosen the bottom one, then you can move the tail piece more. Should be able to access all the gear operation bits this way...

here... this is from an earlier post .. to you... but describes the bits...

well i found out that the part that snapped off was called the bush so now i tried changing the bush...i took the whole dashboard just so i could get to the bush....it took me 8h to do it...and now i jsut found out that the stupid fucking bolt that keeps the bush to the body is too fucking long so i cant get it out of the bush because it gets stuck on the body...so i either have to drill a hole in the body to push the bolt out...or i have to take a whole fucking metal big fucking stick underneath my car away...and i have no lift...if u have noticed that i'm using the word FUCKING alot that is cuz i am pissed i spent my whole day trying to fix it...my hands are bleeding, i took my whole dashboard away probably cracked half the plastic off it....just to find out that some dumb engineer Kittens called luigi or mario put the bush on a metal rod that is impossible to take off unless you have a lift...viva italia

Hi,

I have also removed the stick in order to check the status of the bush;I have bought a spare one just in case Cool

Indeed it was a tricky job to take out the bolt as it hits to the side of the console. But there is a trick to undo it if you simply try to remove the stick by first pulling the bolt till the leftmost side and then by holding it still try to rotate anticlockwise the stick. It will rotate and will be taken off and the bolt will still be in place Exclamation

This did not take me more than an hour but my hands were hurt since there is very sharp steel in the place Rolling Eyes

Regards,

Had the same problem with a long bolt, but had the car raised on axle stands and was, therefore, able to do a bit of "panel beating" (hammer to make the side of the transmission tunnel, where the bolt had to come out from, a bit wider (hit it inwards towards the cabin). Then with a bit of tilting etc. the bolt came out quite easily. Second problem was that the gear stick and bush came out of its housing and was a pain to get back in, but a bit of sanding and grease helped.
