hi guys

not been on here for a while - hope you're all well and cars are going well

after two/three years of having strange "choking" on hot days when starting from cold (only up to 40 degrees) i am finally going to replace the engine temp sender - can any of you confirm that the location is by no.2 cylinder? which one IS no.2 cylinder?!

thanks in advance

Hi,

The cilinders are numbered like this:

|radiator|
2 1
4 3

Not sure about the temp sensor though.

Cheers

If the numbers above are right the temp sensor is near cyl 3 near the oil stick (in my car ,1992 1.4 ie ,its coloured blue).

Indeed, but aren't there two sensors: one for the temp gauge on the dash and another one that sends water temperature to the ecu? Aren't those two placed on the opposite sides of the engine?

Hi Marcin

i am 99.9% sure you're right - it's between cylinders 2+4, connected by a blue 2 pin connector

the sensor for the dashboard temp indicator is 100% sure the one between cylinders 1&3 as I had to renew the connection because of a dashboard indicator going bananas from time to time.

I am looking for the sensor that tells the ECU what temperature the engine is at - is that the same sender as the one that the dash gauge uses? The one I found is on the left hand side when you are sitting in the car. Do you know if you need to drain the cooling system to change it? I turned it a quarter turn today and there seemed to be fluid coming out - do you know if it takes the temperature from the coolant or oil?
kind regards
Nicko

I believe the computer uses the same one as the dash indicator sensor between cyl 1&3. The one on the left side is not a sensor but a switch that activates the warning light when the engine temperature is getting too high. And yes the coolant will drain out when you loosen the sensor cause the water level is higher than the sensor's position. Just pull off the bottom hose of you radiator and that 'll do.

Regards!

I have changed the temp sensor (the one that tells the ECU when the coolant fluid is hot ) last year.In my car (1.4 ie 1992 IAW ECU ) is located near the oil stick ,near the engine number, near the temp warning light sensor. It is blue, and the cable that it is connected is like the one the injectors have. When you unscrew it fluid will come out.You can install a BOSCH ( very cheap ) or in my case a JAEGER (very expensive ,50 EURO).The best is to put the same type that you already have.

I will try tomorrow to take a picture for you to see.
I repeat this is from my car.

Hi,

Bill, what were the symptoms that made you change the sensor?
Did you do it on your own or did the mechanic use the diagnostic tools?

Also, about the excursion in Loutraki it is for 27/6. I'll mail you soon with the details as soon as I contact the club.

Regards,

Regards,

The new sensor was installed 2 years ago not last year,my mistake. It was the end of May ,the weather hot,the engine temp almost 80C ,and i was driving for about 10Km in open road. As i aproached a stop sign i took the gear off to neutral. At that moment the engine started to accelerate by itsself to 3000rpm.I stopped and open the hood and started to look if there was something that i could fix my self.I started to move some cables and i moved by accident the wire that goes to that sensor .The idle went at the normal rpm.I return home and checked the wire everything was ok ,no cuts or misscontacts. And the car was working ok.Next morning the car started to act like there was to much fuel inside the cyl,it was very difficult to drive ,it stalled very easy.I drove it to the repair shop i always go ,explained everything and told me that it must be the temp sensor. He replaced it with one that he had ,just to check if he was right. The one he put was BOSCH and mine was JAEGER.I tryed it for a week ,everything was working ok.But i insisted to put the same the car had ,which was very expensive ( 50 Euro ) .The BOSCH was 15 Euro .
Anyway from that day i never had the some problem again.

P.s. When i went back to put the JAEGER sensor he told that in three days five 33 ( all 1992 models) went with the same problems like mine. They were lucky ,they all had Bosch sensors. It looks like if i one breaks the others follow (like dominos). Very Happy
You can do it your own AFTER THE CAR COOLS DOWN.When you take it off coolant starts to come out and its very HOT.
