Hi,
I see from some of the threads here that a couple of you have done gearbox overhauls yourselves. I have what I think is poor 2nd gear synchro/blocking ring, as 2nd crunches when shifting up or (worse) when shifting down.
I've changed the gear oil which helped but only marginally. I resisted the temptation to use Redline gear oil, because though it will likely help, it will be a gamble with £60. Working on a tight budget here.
From posts here and also from Alfasud Haynes manual and also from 33 workshop manual looks like a tricky gearbox to repair with lots of specialist tools required.
Q> would you try to overhaul yourself? Where can you get parts? How much for set of blocking rings and synchro spacers?
I'll try to source a very cheap spare box, but guess that could be as bad.
Thanks - Munro. |

Welcome to the site. Second gear is a problem on any Sud/33 five speed where the change has been pushed a bit. The box I took out with the 1500 engine was fine (180K km) because I had looked after it but the one that went in with the 16V is bad on second (90K km). It is OK going up but I have to double declutch coming down.
I am now using Redline, the slightly heavier MT-90, and it gives a significant improvement but is not a cure. I still have to double declutch on the way down but the occasional crunch that happened on the way up before, no longer happens. Replacement of synchro is the only complete answer.
All the best _________________ Ken McCarthy - 16V Sprint |

Hi there Munro.
I did an overhaul on my gearbox, after buying an used one, which turned out to be even worse than the original one.
However, with the new (very worn) gearbox installed, I decided to overhaul the old one.
Cost:

Approx. £250 for:
- 5 Synchronizing rings
- 1 Speed control/selector fork (the one between 1st and 2nd was pretty busted)
- 1 Nut (The big one at the outer part of the axle)
- The usual assortment of gaskets and stuff |
You'll find what I wrote about my doing this overhaul in this thread.
As for your question regarding specialist tools, no they are not required, but you do need a BIG wrench for the big nut securing the main pinion. A good assortment of regular garage tools should do the trick.
As for prices / where to get parts, I have no idea since you're in Aus.
I bought my spares from an Alfa dealer, of course they had to get the parts first.
It's expensive, I know, but it's well worth every penny in my opinion.
Best of luck, and welcome to the site! \^_^ _________________ //Wizz
