Hi all,
My gearshift is very loose and sloppy, I'm told that changing the bushings in the linkage will make a huge improvement. Anyone know how difficult this job is? Tips?
Do I get access from below, do I need to undo the rear gearbox mounting. Anyone know where I can get spares in Melbourne, Australia?

i think i have the same problem so would be keen to know too. how expensive a job is this?

Wonder no more, friends! I have recently obtained permission from the local Alfa Romeo Owners Club committee to reproduce a recent newsletter article which covers just these issues:

I haven't tried out any of these suggestions (Huh? JB Weld? Spherical bearings? You mean I have to drop the gearbox?), but I'd certainly like to be able to engage first gear first time every time. I've also noticed it's harder to get in or out of gears while under braking - if I briefly let the brakes off I can move the gearlever then reapply the brakes again. And when I'm cruising through the local reserve and come to a cattlestop (like lots of train rails recessed into the road to stop cows walking through open gates), I use all the bumping and vibration as I drive over it to help shake the car into 1st gear!  |

thats brilliant, thanks for posting that.
my gear change doesnt seem quite as bad as yours but the stick does have to move a very long way to get from gear to gear. i hope this sorts it out.
its a knightmare switching between my nissan gtir and my perm 4. the nissan has a very small tight box and i've added a quick shift kit to it.
the alfa's gear shift must be 5 times bigger than the nissan's.
well there is another job for me to do this week.

hi,
on suds and early 33 there is a plastic washer in the linkage that fails when it's too old. it's very easy to replace (10 minutes)
series 2 33s have another linkage fitted, overhaul is still possible without dismantling everything
series 3 33s are different, and renewal of the rubber bush requires lots of work (dismantling of exhaust, shafts, gearbox mounts).

Not an expert, but replaced the rubber bush between the gear linkage and gearbox selector rod on a series 3 33 a couple of weeks ago. This took about half an hour and has improved things quite a bit. Didn't need to drop the gearbox or remove anything. The replacement bush cost NZ$5 from our local Alfa dealer. |

hi,
don't know if we had the same system fitted ; mine was :
bushing n°11 wont come out because the lack of body clearance prevents withdrawal of the rod n°1. spent 10 minutes figuring out how to fix the car (my purpose was the gearbox seal replacement) then decided to lower the gearbox and remove the mount to be able to remove pin n°5.
did you remove bolt n°12 to get the rod out?

hey all,
i'm going to have a go at repairing my gearshit linkage over the christmas holidays. i'm told that the rubber part in the linkage has probably failed and lead to my sloppy gear change.
is it possible to replace it with something more solid than rubber?
i assume that the rubber part is in there to reduce vibration in the stick? this doesnt bother me if a more solid part would prevent the linkage from becoming as lose again over time.
is there anything else i can do to help tighten up the shifting while i have it all apart?
