Common problem. You have to be very careful and full of patience because if you go hard on pump and surroundings you might damage block. Use of puller if welcomed.
Few of us decided to drill into pump and brake it in parts but there is still problem of unblocking heavely oxidized parts of it from block. _________________ Tino Vatavuk

With patience you'll get there. Use a good lump of wood and use a hammer against the wood hitting it alot at different angles around the pump till it will eventually loosen and eventually you'll be able to walk it out. Takes alot of patience though. _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV

Hi...
This is a common problem...Not only in Alfas 33 but in all sort of cars.
Big hammer, and lots of patience...(ALSO, lots of care to not damage engine block).
I changed 2 water pumps, and after disasembling the parts around the pump i put lots of WD40, in the gasket area (Were pump joins block).
Only in the day after, i will do any work...
Even so it takes some efort to remove the damn thing out.
Take care

Hi
As said above this is a common problem because a) the water pump is an interference fit in the block, and b) there is generally some corrosion. As said above, release agent Penetrene or WD40, care and patience. It has to come out about 1 cm before it is free. If you wish to reuse the water pump take care not to break it because the wall thickness between the flange and the locating diameter is very thin. I broke one the other day by trying to hurry things with a wedge when I had a gap of about 3mm. Bad idea.
Good luck.

I tired, but could not locate this topic using search, as it does not seem to go back far enough.
It is on page 8 of Maintenance and repairs list, last post date is Mar 19 2004. _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Carcassonne.
