on the cam pulleys, i thought that the left sides should both say L and the right side should both say R. In the pic there is a mixture of L & R on both sides

Al... I see. You have a point mate, but I don't think it matters.

The problem is how I bought this car with a broken cambelt, and how that relates to the photos.

If you didn't just replace the cambelt, what terrible internal engine carnage could have made the previous owner assume the cambelt had broken? Wink
Belt skipped and threw timing out?
Dropped valve? Twisted Evil
Thrown a rod? Twisted Evil
Why oh why couldn't you have kept away from 33s, bobbber? Wink

So Bob, what's the problem with this motor? Have you tried to start it?

If you find out that the problem is to do with the valves i've still got a few left from the old motor that you can have.

Hi,

Will it turn over to do a compression check?

Could be a burnt valve, but if just one valve, the car will just run crap with no power, head gasket????

The battery was dead when I got it.... so that's charging up for a compression and running check.

I haven't thought about this before, but will it run ok with the alternator disconnected?

What about the cooling system having no coolant in it?!?!?! For a short while I'm guessing it will be ok!

Funny - years of messing about with cars, and I don't know the answers to these questions....

Also - after about a year break from playing about with them - it's amazing how you can feel like you are wearing boxing gloves when you go back to doing it!!!! Laughing

Yeah you can run it with no alternator but it's only going to run as long as the battery lasts so make sure anything you don't need is switched off ie interior fan/ lights etc. I brought a MX3 back from Bath for a friend and the alternator went wrong........travelled for quite a while before every thing started to go Kittens up.

And you'll get away with a short run with no coolant as i did the exact thing when putting my recon engine in Embarassed I guess it's not recommended but a minute to check the running wont do any harm but make sure you do remember..........just your luck to get it running ok and then forget there's no wet stuff in it!

Thanks Lee... this is what I expected! Very Happy

I'll get the bugger running tomorrow and see how it sounds after checking the cam vernier alignments.

Bobbber,

For the compression check you can take out all the plugs and just turn the motor on the starter. It will turn over dead easy cos of no compression on the 3 non checked cylinders.

It will be a bit of a cowson to screw the compression tester in, just like doing the plugs themselves of course.

well, where do I start - whilst the subject matter is good, your composition needs work. I don't feel you've really captured the atmosphere as well as you could have done.

Maybe a faster shutter speed would have created clearer pictures and how about a filter for some more drama and feeling?
